Weatherman, 1989
Oil on canvas (frame not depicted)
54 x 29 3/4 in (137 x 75 1/2 cm)

“You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.”

The title draws from Bob Dylan’s song, Subterranean Homesick Blues, which conveyed the zeitgeist of an entire generation during the 1960s. The orange skies and plumes of smoke suggest the California wild fires as well as the use of high pressure firehoses during the Civil Rights protests. There is a sense of growing conflict and confusion around which direction to take given the social and environmental turmoils.

Memory, 1981
Oil on canvas
27 x 21 in (70 x 53 1/4 cm)

"It is a drop in the bucket of life."

Referencing the high-speed photography work of Harold Edgerton (1903-90), the crown created by a drop of water. It is a “drop in the bucket” of life. Its inclusion into the pool of memories adds continually to our volume and depth of
experiences. The crowned effect of the undulating liquid can be seen as the ripple effect of history as it is inextricably tied to our future.
